    VP Extends Emergency Aid to floods-hit areas in N Sulawesi

    Tobapos -- Vice President Boediono offered a central government-funded emergency relief aid worth Rp200 million to the North Sulawesi provincial administration for intensifying the rescue efforts for handling the flash floods and landslides.

    The financial aid was handed over to the Provincial Governor Sinyo Harry Sarundajang when the vice president inspected the flood-affected areas on Tuesday, Public Relations Officer of the North Sulawesi Noudy R.P. Tendean stated here on Wednesday.

    The vice president along with his entourage of ministers visited the villages of Dendengan Dalam and Komo Luar.

    The flash floods, which struck several parts of the North Sulawesi province since Wednesday (Jan. 15) caused estimated losses of around Rp1.871 trillion and also resulted in 19 fatalities.

    The flash floods and landslides, triggered by torrential rains in the past few days, struck a number of areas in North Sulawesi, such as the cities of Manado, Tomohon, the districts of Minahasa, North Minahasa, Southeast Minahasa, and the islands of Sangihe and Sitaro.

    In the meantime, on Saturday (Jan. 18), Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono paid a visit to several flood-hit as well as landslide-affected areas in the North Sulawesi provincial capital of Manado.

    Previously, on Monday (Jan. 20), Chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Jusuf Kalla visited the people affected by Wednesday's flash floods.

    During the visit, Kalla's delegation, among other things, visited the evacuation sites in the Tikala Ares village and met with the residents as well as evacuees in the muddy alley of the Minahasa Dendengan Luar area.
