    President Chairs Meeting on Election Preparations

    Tobapos -- President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Thursday chaired a limited cabinet meeting to discuss the preparations for the upcoming presidential election with special emphasis on security.

    The meeting was attended by Vice President Boediono, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Chairul Tanjung, Chief of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) General Moeldoko, Chief of the National Police General Sutarman, Minister/State Secretary Sudi Silalahi, and Cabinet Secretary Dipo Alam, among several others.

    Yudhoyono was scheduled to hold a press conference following the limited cabinet meeting.

    Indonesia will be organizing a free and democratic presidential election on July 9, 2014, which will be contested by only two pairs of presidential and vice presidential candidates: Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa and Joko Widodo (Jokowi)-Jusuf Kalla (JK).

    The pre-election campaign period is between June 4 and July 5, 2014.

    Prabowo Subianto is a retired military general and the founder chairman of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), while his running mate, Hatta Rajasa, is a former coordinating minister for economic affairs and the chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN).

    Jokowi is Jakarta's governor and a cadre of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), while his running mate, JK, is a former vice president and a senior politician of the Golkar Party.

    On July 2, Minister Djoko Suyanto led a coordination meeting to discuss the final preparations for the upcoming election, which was attended by related ministers.

    Following the meeting, Suyanto notified the press that every party must maintain order and security during the election process.

    Meanwhile, te Indonesian citizens overseas will cast their votes for the Indonesian presidential election on July 4-6, 2014, earlier than the July 9 presidential election in the country.

    The General Elections Commission (KPU) has issued a letter of decision regarding the polling date for Indonesia's overseas election committee (PPLN) in 130 countries. (ant/adm)
