Tobapos -- A major project brings together a large group of countries from the Middle East
In Jordan, the Palestinian Authority, Iran, Israel and six other countries have built together the Sesame synchrotron, a vast and expensive instrument meant to probe matter at all levels. It is a unique cooperation, which transcends the general laws of diplomacy.
On 16th May 2017, the ‘masterpiece’ will be inaugurated in the outskirts of Amman (Jordan).
Starting with the unveiling day, the flags of Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Turkey, Palestine, Iran and Israel will wave in front of the yellow-bricked building. And.. yes, you read well: Palestine and Israel conjoined their forces to create something this big.
SESAME is a so-called synchrotron source of light, which, practically, works like a giant microscope.
The massive breakthrough will enable researchers in the region to investigate the properties of advanced materials, biological processes and cultural artifacts.
SESAME is a unique joint venture, based in Jordan, which brings together scientists from its member countries: Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, the Palestinian Authority and Turkey.
European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, said: ‘We are very happy to join forces with CERN to support one of the most exciting scientific projects in the Middle East. The plant SESAME will provide researchers in the region not only installation of the latest generation, it will draw attention to the important progress that can be achieved in the region through peaceful cooperation.
